Why being interrupted can make irritation arrive so quickly

You are halfway through writing something.

Not halfway through the document. Halfway through the sentence.

You know exactly where the thought is going.

Then somebody says your name.

Or Teams pings.

Or a notification arrives.

Or a person appears beside you and begins with the phrase, “Quick question.”

It is rarely a quick question.

By the time you return to the sentence, the words are still on the screen but the thought that produced them has disappeared.

The irritation can arrive surprisingly fast.

That reaction makes more sense when we look at what an interruption actually asks the mind to do.

An interruption is a switch, not just a pause

When a task is interrupted, attention has to move away from one set of goals and towards another.

Then, when the interruption finishes, attention has to return.

The return is not always immediate.

Researchers call the delay before effectively resuming the original task the resumption lag.

A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Applied Ergonomics in 2021 reviewed 33 laboratory experiments containing 49 interventions designed to reduce interruption costs.

The fact that researchers can measurably reduce resumption lag tells us something important: restarting is a cognitive task in its own right.

You are not simply continuing.

You are reconstructing where you were.

Why being interrupted can feel disproportionately annoying

The emotional reaction is not only about the number of seconds lost.

In a well-known 2008 experiment, Gloria Mark, Daniela Gudith and Ulrich Klocke found that people whose work was interrupted compensated by working faster and completed tasks quickly without a drop in measured quality.

That sounds like good news.

It came with a price.

Interrupted participants reported more stress, frustration, time pressure and effort.

So an interruption can make people speed up to recover lost ground while simultaneously making the work feel worse.

This is one reason “but it only took a minute” can miss the point.

The interruption may take a minute.

The switch, reconstruction and pressure around it can cost more than a minute.

Timing matters

Not every interruption is equally disruptive.

Being interrupted while doing something automatic is different from being interrupted while holding several pieces of information in mind.

A question that arrives between tasks may be easy to absorb.

The same question arriving while you are deciding how three complicated pieces fit together can feel like somebody has removed one of the pieces and put it in another room.

A broad systematic review of interruption research identified effects on completion time, resumption, work strategy, decision-making and errors, while also noting that effects depend heavily on task characteristics and the nature of the interruption.

So “interruptions are bad” is too crude.

Context matters.

The irritation can be information without being a verdict

When irritation arrives immediately, it is easy to direct the whole reaction at the interrupter.

They are inconsiderate.

They always do this.

Why can nobody leave me alone for five minutes?

Sometimes those conclusions are fair.

Workplaces can absolutely create cultures where constant interruption is normalised and concentrated work becomes nearly impossible.

But sometimes part of the irritation is generated by the transition itself.

Your mind was organised around one goal.

Now it has been required to reorganise around another.

Recognising that does not excuse unnecessary interruptions.

It simply tells you that the speed of the emotional response may reflect the cognitive cost of the switch.

The worst moment may be when you come back

There is a very particular kind of irritation in returning to a task and knowing that, thirty seconds ago, you knew exactly what you were doing.

You read the last line.

Nothing.

You read the line before that.

Still nothing.

Then the thought slowly reappears.

That recovery process helps explain why repeated small interruptions can feel more draining than their individual duration suggests.

The work keeps having to be rebuilt.

Some interruptions are useful

There is an important limitation here.

People interrupt each other for good reasons.

A colleague may prevent an error.

A child may genuinely need you.

A notification may contain information that matters now.

And some interruptions can provide a useful break from monotonous work.

The evidence does not support designing life so nobody can ever speak to you.

It supports recognising that interruption has a cost, especially when the primary task is demanding and the interruption forces a change of context.

The useful click

The irritation that appears after “quick question” may not be only about the question.

Part of what you are reacting to may be the sudden cost of leaving one mental context and having to rebuild it afterwards.

That makes the reaction easier to understand and gives you another option besides firing it straight back at whoever interrupted you.

One small question

When you notice irritation arrive immediately after an interruption, ask:

Am I angry about what they asked, or about being pulled out of what I was doing?

It may be both.

But separating them can change the response.

The question itself might need an answer.

The interruption pattern might need a boundary.

Or you may simply need ten seconds to reconstruct the thought before deciding that the entire organisation is incompetent.
